Larry Tash, the Honourable Academic Principal of Tsinglan School, was born and raised in Los Angeles, California and graduated from University of California, Los Angeles and California State University, Northrigde. He worked as a school administrator, principal, and supervisor of principals in the Los Angeles Unified School District after graduation and took the role of principal and director at Walter Reed Middle School for 11 years. Currently he worked as an educational consultant in the Los Angeles area. He loves his career as an educator and has always been very serious about doing what is best for children in whatever educational setting he has worked in. He believes that building positive relationships with the school educational staff, the parents, and the students is the only way for a school to become a successful learning environment. These relationships have been critical to his own success and happiness in the positions that he has held.
Board Member and Principal: Cynthia Xin. Ms. Xin is Assistant Principal of Tsinghua University High School, Secretary and Executive Principal of Tsinghua University High School ShangdiCampus. She graduated from the Department of Mathematics at East China Normal University, the Department of Mathematics at Peking University, and the Department of Education at Tokyo Gakugei University. She has been a teacher at Tsinghua University High School since graduation over 20 years ago. She believesthat it takes ten years to grow trees, but a hundred years to rear people. Shealways stands in the perspective of promoting the development of students,convinced that sustainable education is education of the future.
Yanhong Niu, deputy secretary of Tsinglan School, coming fromTsinghua University High School. She graduated from the Mathematics Department of Northeast Normal University and is now a senior mathematics teacher. After 25 years in Tsinghua University High School, she had served as a class teacher, grade leader and branch secretary. She has extensive teaching and management experience.
Dr. Jonathan Gastel, Academic principal, got his Bachelor in Politics Theory from Yale University, Master in Environmental Health from Columbia University and PHD from Johns Hopkins University. He is building the platform to train students to lead in their chosen fields. He taught, advised and led in public and private schools locally and internationally including Stuyvesant High School where he rebuilt a renowned science leadership program. His research focused on how our environment shapes the brain and this work continues to inform his views on education today. now still continues to study, teach, read, and write each day with the hope of improvement. He acted as the Academic Dean of the New York Military Academy (NYMA). Starting from 2017, he has taken the role of Academic consultant of Tsinglan School. He will resign from NYMA from August 2019 and officially join into Tsinglan school as the Academic Principal.
Board Secretary and Administrative Assistant Principal: Lin Jingzi (Lara). Ms. Lin graduated from Wuhan Universityof Technology and the University of Hong Kong, and has been teaching in Tsinghua High School for over ten years. She was awarded as an excellentteacher, has a wealth of front-line teaching and management experience, and isvery popular with the students. She lived in the United States for two years, was engaged in primary and secondary education administrative work, and gaineda deep understanding of the education differences between China and the Westand different schools’ operating models. In the future, she will continue to oninternational education at Tsinghua University High School, bringing to Chinesestudents the United States’ best teaching model, creating a platform with infinite possibilities for well-rounded development of students.
Operations Assiant Principal: Li Chong. Mr.Li graduated from Tsinghua University in computer science and technology, Canada University of Regina in SK computer science, and has been teaching in Tsinghua University for more than 20 years since return to China. He has morethan 20 years of management experience in educational network security andresource management.
June Li, vice-principal in charge of the market, enrollment and boarding, coming from THHS. After graduated from Chongqing University for her master degree, she worked at the National Key Middle School for 18 years. She has been the provincial excellent teacher, academics leader and one of the Top Ten Young Teachers. She has been awarded the national special prize for his model lesson, hosted and taken part in many projects at national level. Several articles of hers have been published on national publications. Besides, she is also a textbook evaluation expert of Ministry of Education. She has served for a long time as an expert of national training, examinant of teacher-recruitment and certification, and evaluation expert of senior title in the middle schools. With love for students and education, she is devoting herself to create the most suitable education for students.
Director of Studies and Humanities Teacher: Li Meng. An alumna of Tsinghua University High School, Ms. Li then graduatedfrom Yale University (B.A.), Middlebury College (M.A.), and Columbia University (M.Ed). She has served as a member of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL, 2013-present), and a member of the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS, 2016-present). Prior to joiningTsinglan School, Ms. Li has worked as the Upper School Assembly Coordinator, Admissions Interviewer, Development Fellow, and Accreditation Chair atRiverdale Country School in New York City. She has also worked as the Program Dean for the Oxbridge Academic Programs at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland.
Lower School Director and Chinese Coordinator: Zhao Xuebin (Aui). A Tsinghua High School Alumni, Mr. Zhao earneda Master of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics in Capital Normal University. He has taught Chinese at the Universidad EAN in Colombia, the Eisenhower Elementary School in Minnesota, United States, and then worked at TsinghuaUniversity High School. He was a visiting student of the late Professor andacoustic phonetics expert Kenneth N. Stevens at MIT and is currently a memberof the International Chinese Language Society (IACL).
Middle School Director and Science Coordinator: Liu Yangqiu. Dr. Liu earned her Ph.D. in biochemistry engineeringfrom Tsinghua University, and has done scientific research and technological work for nearly two decades. She deeply understands the difference between Chinese and foreign science education, and believes that cultivating children'sscientific literacy is very important. As the Science a Coordinator, she willbring a unique perspective to lead the children to open the door to science,experience the fun of science, master the scientific way of thinking about theworld.
Sam Williamson，Middle School Co-Director and Humanities Teacher. Sam is an experienced national and international teacher, throughout his career his effort and talents have been recognised both in the classroom and as an administrator. He gained his BA and PGCE at Newcastle University, UK, before joining the Humanities department at St Burins School, Oxford, where he was subject leader for Philosophy and a pastoral leader as Head of Year. Sam has since developed his expertise through international teaching and administration in both Vietnam (Vietnam Australia International School, Cambridge School, Head of Department) and in China (Malvern College Chengdu, Cambridge School, and Tsinglan School, American Curriculum as Head of Upper School and Head of Humanities). His high standards and expectations have helped drive student growth, staff development and departmental success towards achieving school-wide objectives. As an educator, his ethos is to empower students and teachers alike by providing high quality, personalised feedback that allows people to reflect on their work and take the next steps to success. His passion for developing enquiring, international minds within a context of strong pastoral support have been recognised through a successful career which he hopes to continue building at Tsinglan School.
Ying Zhang, Assistant to Principal, Director of Student Development Center, with 14 years of working experience, she worked at Bulgaria and Sweden and then came back and settled in China after staying 7 years in the United States. She has accumulated profound experiences of western culture and rich experiences in cross-cultural management practices. While studying at university of Texas in the United States, she really had a very good and deep understanding of American society, culture and education. She trusts that if try with enthusiasm and efforts, anything is possible. She hopes she can discover the values of life during the journey of exploring the true meaning of education together with all Tsinglan School team!
Cathy Kang, Director of ESL Centre, graduated from Xi’an Foreign Languages University with a Master Degree in English Linguistics and Applied Linguistics and is an admitted candidate of USC Global Executive Ed.D program. Ms. Kang is a member of NACAC and TESOL and has been working in international curriculum program and college counselling in one of the top high schools in China for about 10 years. She has been an English teacher in High School National Curriculum, SDP, IELTS and TOEFL. She has successfully coached students in various national and international competitions. The Debate team under her coach has stood out for many times in national and international events as the Champions, the Best Teams and the Best Speakers. Ms. Kang has been invited for multiple times to both national and international counselor conferences. Many of her students are now studying at the top universities such as Yale, Princeton, Peking University, Tsinghua University and etc.
Ming, College Counselling, was born in Fujian, China and moved to the United States at childhood. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Yale University in East Asian Studies and Master degree in Global Studies in Education from University of Illinois-Champaign. She made brilliant achievements while acting as the College Counselling at THHS. With nearly five years of experience counseling students regarding various topics in international education, she has guided more than one hundred students through the college application process to the United States, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, China, Korea, Japan, and Singapore. As a college counselor, she loves working with students to identify their interests and passions and guiding students to pursue their academic goals. She believes fervently in the concept of Best Fit when it comes to making a college list and works with students to enhance and best highlight their strengths on their college applications worldwide. Bilingual in English and Mandarin, Ming is more than thrill to join the Tsinglan family and work with students and families in their search for higher education. When Ming is not in her office, you can always find her hunting for a good bite, hitting the gym, or stretching on a yoga mat.
Tom Gates, English teacher. He was born and raised in New Hampshire (in the U.S.). He graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a BA in Economics. Tom found that he enjoyed living in another culture and being in the classroom. He decided to try and make teaching overseas a long-term endeavor so he obtained certifications he thought would help him to do so.He is a licensed teacher in Florida with a specialization in ESOL K-12. He also has 120-hour TESOL and 50-hour Business English certifications. He taught in Korea’s public schools for approximately five years with experiences of teaching grades 1 through 9. Tom’s strengths as a teacher are in classroom management and maintaining an orderly but light-hearted environment to give all students a chance to participate without being interrupted. In his free time, Tom likes to volunteer, exercise, and travel. He also enjoys practicing judo.
Tina Wang, Pre-school Administrative Director, Tsinghua High School Alumni. Ms Wang received her bachelor’s and master's degrees from Tsinghua University, majoring in economics and HR management and was awarded Excellent Student Leader. She visited the United States twice as a student representative, completing the management program at Babson College and the leadership program by the International Leadership Foundation. She has worked for the Head Office of China Construction Bank and Tsinghua Unigroup and took the role of Operations Chief of one of Beijing International Kindergarten. She loves singing, running, swimming and has a cheerful and easygoing character. Enthusiastic for early childhood education, she also has international kindergarten work experience.
PreK-K Director and Homeroom Teacher: GaoShuang (Grace). Mr. Gao graduated from the Beijing Institute of Education majoringin English and pre-school education., She has participated in AMS Montessori College’s 3-6-year-old Montessori teaching method training, and is a certified Montessori teacher. She has served as an English teacher, Montessori teacher, teaching director and other positions in her 16-year career s of pre-schooleducation. As a result, she has a wealth of knowledge regarding early childhood education, especially Montessori education.
